New Market Tax Credit (NMTC)
New Market Tax Credits (NMTC) is a federal program designed to spur new or increased investment in operating businesses or real estate projects in communities where high rates of poverty and unemployment are present. The program attracts investment capital by permitting individual and corporate investors to receive a tax credit against their Federal income tax return when they make equity investments in specialized financial institutions. The NMTC statute requires that investments be located in census tracts where the individual poverty rate is at least 20 percent or where median family income does not exceed 80 percent of the area median.
