Exit 3 Closures on July 28-31; Paving Updates
The Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) is providing regular updates about the paving project in Brattleboro. VTrans published an update about what's ahead at Exit 3 on July 23, 2026 and provided an update about U.S. Route 5 and Vermont Route 9 on July 24, 2026. Interstate 91 Exit 3
Interstate 91 Exit 3 on- and off-ramps are now scheduled to be closed from 12 a.m. to 5 a.m. on the following dates:
- Tuesday through Friday, July 28-31
Multiple, short-duration closures are planned for I-91, Exit 3 northbound and southbound ramps for paving operations. Pavement has been re-scheduled to be placed next week. Work is planned to take place across 3-4 shifts total with the ramps closing at midnight and reopening at 5 a.m.
Detour Information — Detour signs and message boards will be in place each night to direct motorists to utilize Exit 2, Exit 4, Vermont Route 9, and U.S. Route 5 as appropriate.
- I-91: Traffic traveling south on I-91 should use Exit 4 to U.S. 5. Motorists traveling north on I-91 should use Exit 2 to VT 9 to U.S. 5.
- U.S. 5: Vehicles traveling on U.S. 5 to I-91 South should proceed to Exit 2 via VT 9. Northbound vehicles on U.S. 5 should continue to Exit 4.
U.S. Route 5 and Vermont Route 9
Overnight work on U.S. Route 5 and Vermont Route 9 is planned from 7 p.m. on Friday, July 24, to 6 a.m. on Saturday, July 25.
Vermont Route 9: (Night Work) — Flaggers will continue to control alternating traffic patterns through single-lane closures between the Interstate 91 Exit 2 interchange and the Edward Heights intersection in West Brattleboro. Monday night through Friday morning, work zones will be active from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. No street-side parking will be available in these areas of VT 9 from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Pedestrians — Please continue to exercise caution when navigating the work zone as sidewalk work is finishing up on VT 9.
U.S. Route 5: Brattleboro to Putney (Day and Night Work) — No traffic impacts are planned for the work zone from Bennett Drive north to Putney for next week.
U.S. Route 5: Brattleboro (Night Work) — Flaggers and uniformed traffic officers will continue to assist traffic through single-lane closures on U.S. 5 from Noah's Lane through the Exit 3 roundabout to the Bennett Drive intersection. From 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday night through Friday morning, alternating traffic patterns will be in place as needed. Motorcyclists should watch for uneven surfaces.
Construction Activities
Vermont Route 9: (Night Work) — Sidewalk installation should be finishing up on VT 9 next week. Some intermediate and driveway apron paving operations are scheduled for later in the week.
U.S. Route 5: Brattleboro to Putney (Day and Night Work) — No work is planned on the northern segment of the project for next week.
U.S. Route 5: Brattleboro (Night Work) — Paving of the final wearing course is scheduled from Noah's Lane through the Exit 3 roundabout to the intersection with Bennett Drive.
Interstate 91, Exit 3 Upcoming Closures: Brattleboro (Night Work) — The short-duration closures planned from 12 a.m. to 5 a.m., Tuesday through Friday mornings have been scheduled for next week for the application of final pavement on the exit ramps. Additional information on the closure schedule will be sent on Monday afternoon, July 27. Detour routes will remain the same.
