Church Street Retaining Wall Project Begins July 28

The Town of Brattleboro would like to notify residents, businesses, and motorists that construction to replace the retaining wall on Church Street will begin Tuesday, July 28, 2026.

The project will be completed by a private contractor and is expected to continue for several weeks.

During construction, the eastbound (downhill) lane of Church Street will be closed to all through traffic. Motorists traveling downhill will be detoured via School Street or Lower Green Street, while the westbound (uphill) lane will remain open to traffic.

For the safety of pedestrians, the sidewalk within the work zone will be closed, and pedestrian traffic will be detoured to the opposite side of Church Street for the duration of the project.

For the safety of both the traveling public and construction crews, the eastbound lane closure will remain in place at all times, including evenings, weekends, and other non-construction hours, until the project is complete.

The project includes:

  • Replacement of the existing failing retaining wall.
  • Construction of improved sidewalk infrastructure.
  • Installation of upgraded lighting.

Motorists are encouraged to allow additional travel time, follow all posted detour signs, and use caution when traveling near the work zone.

The Town of Brattleboro appreciates the public's patience and cooperation while these important infrastructure improvements are completed.
