Brattleboro Named a Bike-Friendly Community

The Town of Brattleboro was recently awarded a bronze-level Bicycle-Friendly Community designation from the League of American Bicyclists.

The Brattleboro Coalition for Active Transportation (BCAT) applied for the recognition with assistance from Brattleboro's Town Manager John Potter, Planning Director Sue Fillion, Public Works Director Dan Tyler, and former Police Chief Norma Hardy, as well as Jeff Nugent, Senior Planner at the Windham Regional Commission. A small designation ceremony was held at Brooks Memorial Library on April 20, 2026.

Receiving a bronze-level award is a strong validation of the improvements in bicycle infrastructure made by the Town since receiving an honorable mention in 2020.

These improvements include:

•  The covered bike rack at the Brattleboro Food Co-op

•  A bicycle tool repair station and community bike pump installed in front of Brooks Memorial Library

•  Bike lanes created on Western Avenue from Exit 2 to Green Street

•  Bike lanes, a crosswalk, and a flashing beacon on Putney Road from the West River to Town Crier Drive

•  A scoping study on Canal Street to improve safety for bicyclists and pedestrians

•  A design change at the intersection of Western Ave and Green Street that slows eastbound traffic turning onto Green Street

There will always be more to do to improve safety for bicyclists and pedestrians in Brattleboro. BCAT will continue their efforts to meet goals and priorities listed in the Town’s Walk/Bike Action Plan, and on our bronze-level report card, which lists specific strategies to make our town more bike-friendly.

BCAT wants all users of the road to feel safe. If you would like to be an active part of this organization, contact us at [email protected].
