Information and Police Officer Hiring Process

When your application has been received, we will contact you with information regarding the Basic Entrance Exams. These three tests (written, fitness and psychological profile) are given once each month at the Vermont Police Academy, and are given all in one day. There is a minimum score of 70% on the written exam, and there is a fee of $30 charged by the Academy. There is no charge for the fitness exam, and the Brattleboro Police Department pays the cost of the psychological profile.

The following is a very brief schedule of the hiring process.

Phase 1 – Participation in the Oral Boards
Phase 2 – Background Investigation
Phase 3 – Polygraph Exam
Phase 4 – Medical Exam
Phase 5 – Final Physical Fitness Test

These phases will be described in detail as you move through the process.

Salary

Police Officer’s salaries are negotiated by collective bargaining. 

The Town of Brattleboro pays its police officers an Academy Wage, followed by a Training Wage. Hire dates are approximately 2-weeks prior to the start of a Vermont Police Academy full time officer course of instruction.

As of fiscal year 2023, base pay for a Police Officer 1, after training, is $52,103.17 and the maximum pay for a patrol officer is $70,185.02.
