Apply to the department
You must apply to be a Brattleboro Police Officer online through the Town's career website here.
Oral Board Interview
After applying online, you will be invited to meet with selected members of the department. You will have an oral board interview. Following successful completion of the oral board, a background investigator will contact you to request some preliminary information from you and give you a personal history questionnaire to fill out.
State Mandated Testing
After successful completion of the oral board interview, you will participate in the Vermont Criminal Justice Training Council's (VCJTC) entry testing. At the academy, the VCJTC administers the required physical, and psychological testing. These tests are given during a day long session at the Vermont Police Academy, and will cost you about $30.
The physical assessment is pass/fail, and must be passed to move to the psychological testing.
Conditional Offer of Employment
After positive review of the testing and interview, the Chief or their designee can extend a conditional offer of employment. This means that you can be hired as a police officer pending the successful completion of your background investigation.
Background Investigation
Once your completed personal history questionnaire is received by the department and reviewed by a background investigator, you will be contacted and your background investigation will begin. The length of time needed for a background investigation can range from several days to several weeks, depending on the depth of your background and the information uncovered. The investigator will keep you informed as the process unfolds.
TRAINING
Non-Certified (new to policing) and Part-Time Certified
If you are not full-time certified by the Vermont Criminal Justice Training Council, you will be required to attend the Vermont Police Academy. This is a 19-week residential program run in Pittsford VT. For detailed information about the training curriculum, go to www.vcjtc.state.vt.us. After successful completion of the academy training, you will begin a 12-week field training program where you will be trained and evaluated by selected patrol officers.
Full-Time Certified (Vermont and other agencies)
Lateral transfers from other Vermont agencies will be immediately placed in our 12 week field training program. Full-time certified officers from other states/jurisdictions will have their certifications evaluated by the VCJTC. If your certification is accepted, you will be placed in the field training program. If it is not, you will have to attend the police academy training described above.
Required Duty Equipment
The Brattleboro Police Department will provide you with all equipment required for duty.
