Carpenter Cemetery (Hamilton Road)
The first reference found in the Town Clerk’s office to this cemetery is in a deed dated January 8, 1887, transferring 140 acres that were once part of the Abel Carpenter farm. The first reference to Abel Carpenter purchasing land is in 1796.
It is unclear when this piece was added to his property, but it was before his daughter died in 1833 as hers is the earliest stone found. It is unknown how many burials were made in this family cemetery as not all graves may have been marked, or the markers may have broken or weathered beyond recognition. The land remained in the Carpenter family and was apparently inherited by Humphrey Carpenter in 1864 when Abel died.
The first deeds transferring the property out of the Carpenter family do not reference the burial ground.
