Routine Water System Maintenance Starts Week of Oct. 5

The Brattleboro Department of Public Works' Utility Distribution Division will begin conducting routine maintenance on the Town’s water distribution system during the week of October 5, 2026.

This work will include flushing dead-end water mains, exercising water system valves, and operating and inspecting fire hydrants throughout the distribution system. These activities are part of the Town’s regular preventative maintenance program and help ensure that water infrastructure remains operational and reliable.

This maintenance is separate from the Town’s larger routine water main flushing program. Residents should not expect to lose water service as a result of this work. However, customers may temporarily experience minor changes in water pressure or discolored water as valves and hydrants are operated and sediment within the system is disturbed.

Residents may also notice water flowing along roadways, into drainage systems, or from hydrants while crews are flushing sections of the water system. This is an expected part of the maintenance process and does not indicate a water main break.

If discoloration occurs, customers are encouraged to run cold water from a faucet for several minutes until the water clears.

Residents may see DPW crews working around hydrants, valves, and within roadways throughout the community. Motorists are asked to use caution when approaching work areas and follow any temporary traffic patterns that may be in place.

The maintenance work will take place at various locations throughout the water system and is expected to continue over the coming weeks as conditions and operational schedules allow.

The Department of Public Works appreciates the public’s patience and cooperation while this important preventative maintenance is completed.
