Changes Coming to Brattleboro Waste Collection on July 1
After extensive negotiations, the Town of Brattleboro has signed a new contract with Casella for trash and recycling collection, and we are on track to launch our new, Town-managed compost pickup program. These changes will take effect on July 1, 2026.
The updates to the solid waste program are designed to keep operations running smoothly and to offer the community a new option for diverting organic waste. Below is an overview of the new service.
Recycling Pickup Frequency is Changing
Starting July 1, recycling pickup will change from weekly to every other week.
-
Your trash and recycling will be picked up on the same day, but recycling will only occur every other week.
-
There is NO change to your recycling containers. You can continue to use the bins you have now, but please label the contents of your containers. The Town will not be implementing automated pickup or distributing new recycling carts at this time.
-
Because recycling is happening every other week, you may want to consider using a bigger container or buying an additional container. Brattleboro residents can purchase additional recycling and compost bins at the Finance Department, located in Suite 111 of the Municipal Center. Recycling bins cost $15.
-
The current weekly recycling service will continue until June 30, 2026. All changes will officially begin on July 1, 2026.
Trash Pickup Frequency Remains Unchanged
Trash collection will continue to be picked up every other week under the current Pay-As-You-Throw program, using the official Town bags. The day trash is collected from your household will not change under the new contract.
Compost Pickup is Launching Weekly
The Town of Brattleboro will begin its new, Town-managed curbside compost pickup service on July 1, 2026. Compost will be picked up by the Town weekly and disposed of at Windham Solid Waste under a separate contract. Compost will be collected weekly.
-
Compost will be picked up on the same day as your trash and recycling.
-
We encourage residents to purchase the green, 13-gallon compost containers that are easily identifiable by Town personnel. These containers are available for purchase for $30 at the Finance Office, Room 111 in the Municipal Center. If you use a different container, please clearly label it “Compost.”
