Changes Coming to Brattleboro Waste Collection on July 6

After extensive negotiations, the Town of Brattleboro has signed a new contract with Casella for trash and recycling collection, and we are on track to launch our new, Town-managed compost pickup program. These changes will take effect on Monday, July 6, 2026.

The updates to the solid waste program are designed to keep operations running smoothly and to offer the community a new option for diverting organic waste. Below is an overview of the new service.

Recycling Pickup Frequency is Changing

Starting Monday, July 6, recycling pickup will change from weekly to every other week.

  • Your trash and recycling will be picked up on the same day.

  • There is NO change to your recycling containers. You can continue to use the bins you have now, but please label the contents of your containers. The Town will not be implementing automated pickup or distributing new recycling carts at this time.

  • Because recycling is happening every other week, you may want to consider using a bigger container or buying  an additional container. Brattleboro residents can purchase additional recycling bins at the Finance Department, located in Suite 111 of the Municipal Center. Recycling bins cost $15. NOTE: Bins have been restocked as of July 17, 2026.

  • The current weekly recycling service will continue through the week of June 29. All changes will officially begin on Monday, July 6, 2026.

  • During the week of July 6–10, A Week residents will have trash, recycling and compost collected, while B Week residents will only have compost collected. View this document to determine if your household is on the A week schedule or the B week schedule.

Trash Pickup Frequency Remains Unchanged

Trash collection will continue to be picked up every other week under the current Pay As You Throw program, using the official Town bags. The day trash is collected from your household will not change under the new contract. View the Pay As You Throw calendar or the A/B week guide.

Compost Pickup is Launching Weekly

The Town of Brattleboro will begin its new, Town-managed curbside compost pickup service on Monday, July 6, 2026. Compost will be picked up by the Town and disposed of at Windham Solid Waste under a separate contract.

  • Compost will be picked up weekly. It will be picked up on the same day of the week as your trash and recycling.

  • We encourage residents to purchase the green, 13-gallon compost containers that are easily identifiable by Town personnel. These containers are available for purchase for $30 at the Finance Office, Room 111 in the Municipal Center. If you use a different container, please clearly label it “Compost.”

  • Program participants can register their address as an active compost user to help the Town improve service and track rates of participation and waste diversion. Registering is not required to participate in the compost program.
