Scam Alert: Lookout for Emails Impersonating Planning Officials

Please be aware of a nationwide scam in which scammers impersonate local government planning and zoning officials. Scammers will use a variety of tactics to request money through emails that may appear legitimate but are not.

Be on the look out for:

  • Emails designed to look like they came from a representative from the Brattleboro Planning Department. The email address may even contain the town seal or an employee’s name, but the email was not sent from the Brattleboro.gov domain.

  • Attachments designed to look like an official document or invoice

  • An email that uses urgent or threatening language

The Town of Brattleboro does not request payments through wire transfers or gift cards. Legitimate payments are only accepted in person or via the drop box at the Municipal Center, by mail, or through an official online portal, accessible through the Town’s website. The Town advises the public to not click on any hyperlinks that appear in the body of suspicious email or attachments.

Members of the public may contact the Planning Department at [email protected] or call 802-251-8154 with any questions about the legitimacy of any emails they receive.
