Little Free Library Installed at Living Memorial Park

The Brattleboro Recreation & Parks Department has received a donation of a “Little Free Library” from the Brattleboro Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), a national nonprofit, non-political volunteer women's service organization. The Little Library is located along the pathway to the playground at Living Memorial Park. Visitors are encouraged to take or donate a book.

During an unveiling ceremony on May 1, Carolyn Handy, the Vermont DAR State Librarian and chapter regent, said the purpose behind the project is to "highlight the history of the American Revolution, the sacrifices made by our veterans, as well as to promote literacy for children and adults."

DAR, along with Brooks Memorial Library, will keep the Little Free Library stocked with adult and children's books, both new and used. The local DAR chapter applied for a $500 grant to procure and assemble the small wooden structure, and Rec & Parks staff installed it outside the poolhouse at the park.

"We appreciate DAR members approaching the Town on this project," said Brattleboro Recreation & Parks Director Carol Lalotte. "It's a perfect location, and we will take good care of this Little Library."

The Little Free Library at Living Memorial Park will be searchable on the Little Free Library map database by its official charter number, 195907. The library should appear in the database by the end of May 2025.

Anyone who comes to the park is welcome to take or donate a book, said DAR Regent Handy (pictured above). The local DAR, which promotes literacy, hopes the new library will have a positive ripple effect in the community.
