Our Organization
The Town of Brattleboro employs about 170 employees across 11 departments (view our organizational chart here). The Town operates on an annual budget of about $23 million. Brattleboro has a five-person Selectboard, a form of government common in New England communities. Brattleboro holds an annual Representative Town Meeting in which meeting members discuss, debate, and vote on the town budget and on a number of other binding and non-binding policies.
Our Commitment to Transparency
The Town of Brattleboro utilizes an online budget platform to ensure the public is able to easily access municipal finances. The Finance Director will collaborate with OpenGov, the platform's creators, to publish a digital, interactive budget book each fiscal year. The FY26 budget is currently in development.
Our Ideal Candidate
The Director of Finance plays an essential role in the leadership team of the Town, managing all facets of the Finance Department. This position is critical in ensuring the financial health and efficiency of town operations.
The Director is responsible for budget preparation and monitoring, financial reporting, investment of public funds, annual audits, purchasing, cash management, bank relations, accounts payable and receivable, debt management, and coordinating with other town departments and outside agencies. These duties and responsibilities require attention to detail, accuracy, and time management skills.
In addition, the Director must have strong organizational, documentation, economic, and accounting skills. The position requires a minimum of 5 years of experience in financial management, accounting, or a similar role; knowledge of governmental accounting principles and practices; familiarity with budgeting and forecasting processes; the ability to analyze financial data; and strong leadership and communication skills.
