
UPDATE: Vernon Street Area Open to Traffic
UPDATE POSTED 6/25 @ 10 AM:
On June 24, 2024 around 8:20 p.m., a hydrochloric acid leak from railcar was reported around 541 Vernon Street. A stain 3 feet in diameter was observed on the railroad ballast. The railcar in question had been stationed in the lot since June 21.
Brattleboro Fire Department, Brattleboro Police Department, Brattleboro Public Works, New England Central Railroad, and the Vermont Haz-Mat Team responded, and traffic was blocked from the area. The leak has since been mitigated, and a clean-up crew was on-site at approximately 7 a.m. on June 25.
The area around Vernon Street is fully accessible to traffic at this time.

As of 9:45 p.m. on June 24, the Brattleboro Fire Department is on the scene at 541 Vernon Street (Route #142) responding to an active hazardous material leak involving a railcar. There is no threat to the public at this time, but the area of Vernon Street is closed for emergency scene operations.
The Brattleboro Fire Department asks all community members to avoid the area. Detours have been established via Cotton Mill Hill Road to ensure your safety and the safety of emergency crews.
The emergency is expected to take several hours to mitigate, and motorists should expect the detour to be the same. Currently operating at this emergency are the Brattleboro Fire Department, Brattleboro Police Department, Brattleboro Public Work, New England Railroad, and the Vermont Haz-Mat Team.
