Solar Eclipse Safety Tips

The Brattleboro Fire Department is reminding the public to stay safe during the solar eclipse, which is expected to happen on Monday, April 8 from approximately 2 to 4:30 p.m.

In the event that you're on the road when the eclipse is occurring, drivers should keep the following safety tips in mind:

  • Keep headlights on.
  • Put the sun visor down to block your view of the sun.
  • Do NOT wear eclipse glasses while driving.
  • Do NOT try to photograph or video the eclipse while driving.
  • Do NOT pull over to the side of the road, highway, or interstate to view the eclipse.
  • Exit the roadway and park in a safe area away from traffic to view the eclipse.
  • Be mindful of pedestrians that many be walking around with their eyes on the sky.

If you're planning on viewing the eclipse, do so safely by checking out this safety guide from NASA.

And dont' forget: Brooks Memorial Library has eclipse-viewing glasses available at the circulation desk (while supplies last)! Learn about that and all of the library's eclipse-related events here.
