Library Enters Next Phase of Construction on July 27
The next phase of Brooks Memorial Library’s renovation project will begin on Monday, July 27, 2026.
This phase includes the closure of the sidewalk in front of the library’s Main Street entrance, as well as the accessible ramp connecting the Municipal Center parking lot to the library’s rear entrance. Crews will remove and replace the sidewalk in front of the library and Municipal Center, as well as the connecting accessible walkway.
Although the sidewalk directly in front of the library will be closed, patrons will still be able to access the Main Street entrance by approaching from the south side of the building through a fenced area. The upper entrance will remain closed during this phase. The stairway leading from the front of the Municipal Center to Main Street will also be closed.
Vehicle traffic will not be affected during this phase of the project.
Parking & Entering the Building
The sidewalk and parking spots in front of the library will be closed during construction. A temporary crosswalk has been added to Main Street in front of Brattleboro Saving & Loan allowing pedestrians to cross to the other side of Main Street.
• The 15-minute library parking space and one accessible parking space will be moved south on Main Steet.
• Four 2-hour library use parking spaces will be available in the Harris Parking Lot.
• The two designated accessible spaces in the State Building parking lot will remain. Patrons parking in those spaces will need to use the cross walks to cross to the other side of the street then cross back over in front of Brattleboro Savings & Loan in order to enter the library. Please follow the Library Entrance signs to access the Main Street entrance.

Additional details about the project are expected in mid-August.
The renovation project will expand the usable space throughout the exterior of the building. The scope of work includes safety and accessibility improvements, along with longstanding maintenance needs. The project is supported by the American Rescue Plan Act Coronavirus Capital Projects Fund (CPF) administered by the U.S. Department of the Treasury as part of an award totaling $16.4 million for capital improvements to Vermont’s public libraries. It is one of 14 CPF projects overseen by the Vermont Department of Libraries.
