Get Ready for Election Day
Below is helpful information for the March 5th Presidential Primary, Town Meeting Day, and WSESD School Board elections.
Voting In Person
The polling place for all three districts in Brattleboro is the American Legion, 32 Linden St., from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m.
Parking is available at the American Legion, the State Building, and the Municipal Center parking lots. There are accessible parking spaces near the American Legion entrance. There is a wheelchair immediately inside the door with a ramp for anyone who may need it.
Early Voting
Brattleboro voters can vote in person at the Town Clerk’s Office through March 4 at 5 p.m. The Town Clerk’s Office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Town Meeting Members
Town Meeting members are still needed in all districts. Anyone interested in running for a position as a write-in candidate must file a Declaration of Candidacy with the town clerk by the close of the polls on Election Day in order for their votes to be counted. Declarations of Candidacy will be posted on a bulletin board at the polls so voters will be aware of those interested in vacant positions. A minimum of 10 votes for Town Meeting Member and 30 votes for Town Officers are required to be elected. Votes must match the correct position and term length on the declaration in order to be counted.
Presidential Primary
Unlike our state August primary, voters in a presidential primary must declare which ballot they want to vote. This does not oblige you to consider yourself a member of a party, but you will only be given one ballot to take to the voting booth. Sample ballots are posted outside polling places so you can see both ballots before you declare.
Both the Republican and Democratic ballots have space for a write-in selection. Only votes for actual persons are tallied and reported on election night. Fictional names, uncommitted, or illegible entries in the write-in line will be considered blank ballots.
Same-Day Registration
Vermont has same-day voter registration. However, to save time on Election Day, it is advisable to register before to 5 p.m. the day before the election, by visiting olvr.vermont.gov.
You can also update your voter information or request a ballot at mvp.vermont.gov.
Absentee Ballots
If you previously requested absentee ballots, be sure to return them. The Town Clerk’s Office must have them in-hand by 7 p.m. on March 5 in order to count them.
You can return ballots by mail, although at this point in time, it is recommended to do so by placing them in the drop box in the Municipal Center parking lot or by bringing them directly to the polls on Election Day.
Town Clerk Office Hours
Office hours for the Brattleboro Town Clerk’s office are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The Town Clerk’s Office will be closed on Tuesday, March 5, Election Day. The office will also be closed to the public on the morning of Wednesday, March 6, re-opening at 12 p.m.
