Main Street Decorative Lights Illuminate Red in Honor of Fallen Firefighters

This week, the decorative overhead lights across Main Street in downtown Brattleboro are illuminated in red as a visible and deliberate tribute to fallen firefighters and the fire service nationwide.

This year, the Brattleboro Fire Department has dedicated the red lighting in honor of Lieutenant Aaron “Coop” Cooper of the Keene Fire Department, who died from cancer attributed to his time in the fire service. His death serves as a powerful reminder of the long-term health risks faced by firefighters and the sacrifices made not only in moments of emergency, but over the course of a career.

Red is widely recognized as the color of the fire service and is used across the country to honor firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty. By lighting Main Street red, the Town of Brattleboro and the Brattleboro Fire Department join communities nationwide in remembering those who have fallen and standing in solidarity with their families and fellow firefighters.

This tribute is intended both to honor Lieutenant Cooper’s service and to acknowledge the dedication, courage, and risks firefighters continue to accept while serving their communities. We appreciate the community’s understanding and support as we take this time to recognize the sacrifice behind the uniform.
